Challenge

  • Safeguarding the integrity and security of an online banking platform against sophisticated cyber threats
  • Validating end-to-end encryption between the bank's website and users' browsers
  • Assessing the resilience of OTP-based two-factor authentication delivered via SMS
  • Identifying any path that could expose sensitive payment data such as credit card PIN codes

Solution

Our team, equipped with advanced technological tools and unrivaled expertise, embarked on a mission to reinforce the client's cyber defenses. Using the advanced capabilities of Burp Proxy, we initiated an in-depth analysis of the web traffic between the bank's website and its users' browsers. This strategic approach enabled us to scrutinize every piece of data in transit, leading to the discovery of a significant security flaw — a vulnerability that risked the exposure of credit card PIN codes despite strong encryption and the additional security layer of One-Time Passwords (OTPs) sent via SMS.

In response, we devised a strategy to simulate an attack scenario that could exploit this vulnerability, allowing us to intercept OTPs and, consequently, access the PIN codes of numerous credit cards. This exercise was pivotal in demonstrating the potential risk and in formulating a robust countermeasure to eliminate the vulnerability.

Results

Upon uncovering this critical vulnerability, we immediately alerted our client, enabling them to take swift and effective measures to rectify the issue. This proactive approach fortified their online banking application's security and averted a possible breach that could have led to significant financial losses and eroded customer trust. By identifying and addressing vulnerabilities ahead of time, the bank prevented potential fraud and preserved the reliability of their online banking services.
